Dave Cutler's resignation has been accepted. Jack Smith told those of us at
DECwest this morning. Roger Heinen will be coming here to accept Dave's
responsibilities for an indeterminate period.

No further information is available at this time. Jack Smith has committed to
us here that DECwest will continue to be a viable part of Digital in the future.

Subj: It's official...

Jack Smith announced to DECwest yesterday at 11:45 AM that he had accepted
Dave's resignation. He said that Dave would continue to "have a relationship"
with Digital. He said that DECwest would continue. He said that Roger Heinen
will assume Dave's responsibilities on a temporary basis.

*No data is available on what Dave will be doing.*

Smith indicated that he would not take questions from the floor.

Dave wasn't to be seen during or after the announcement.

As most of you know, Roger has been my supervisor for about four of the eleven
years I've been at DEC, so I don't need to be convinced that he's a good guy.
That helps.

Smith said that Roger would address us on Tuesday.

Smith said that he would return in about a month to address us.

More later as it settles down.

Subj: by now, you probably know more than I do, but here's what I found so far

Apparently there was a meeting in Seattle at 10 o'clock yesterday, where
Cutler was told that he was either going to report to Hefner or resign (meeting
was either with Shields or Smith - this company has so many high-level managers
these days that it is hard to keep track!). He apparently did not like that
and declared that he was resigning, and stormed out of the building. At noon
yesterday, they called a meeting of the people who work there and made a brief
announcement that Cutler had resigned and that the people would be working for
Roger Heinein (there are apparently some folks out there who do not like him,
and it is also said that Heinein' s wife hates Seattle, so the rumor is that the
assignment is real temporary), and that there would be no questions - meeting
took about ten minutes. The folks working out there apparently had a big bash
at Cutler's house last night, but Cutler himself never showed up - in fact, no
one has seen him since, and he has not cleaned out his office or anything. This
info as of late last night - Covert has not heard from his friends out there
today, so they are probably not in work. That's all I know, and all of it
came from the mail from Henry Tumblin (which I sent you) and a phone call a
little while ago from Covert, who is still home supervising his heating
contractor - Covert was a very hot boy when he called: they are currently
RUNNING his new furnace to test it!

You probably now know more than I've heard; if there has been any official
announcement anywhere but in Seattle, I've yet to hear about it.
